I love supporting small businesses. Mark's food is out standing. It's fresh, made to order and "oh my" the croissant sandwiches are out of this world. Cafe 817 is my go to breakfast place in Anchorage.

Such a surprise. One guy running the whole show when we were there. He was greeter, chef, waiter, and cashier and did a great job with it all. Food was great.

The owner is also the cook and dishwasher but just be patient it's worth it. Ample amounts of food and all of the baked goods are homemade. He does take credit cards but prefers cash. This place is not large but it's comfortable and the location is great.

As I was strolling down the street I happened upon this lovely cafe. Big open space with plenty of seating and a sense of warmth. The owner (I presume) is a kind man, who's working the business by himself at the moment. Last but not least, I paid 4$ for a SIZABLE muffin that was absolutely delicious. He conversed with me and told me history of places in Alaska, and left me feeling very comfortable. 10/10! Come and give this place a try.

We were staying at a nearby hotel and looking for a quick breakfast in downtown Anchorage. The staff suggested Cafe 817 and it quickly became a favorite stop. As earlier reviews note, the place is run by the owner who is super friendly, has a great sense of humor and does everything by himself! He takes your order, cooks your meal, and rings up your bill. The food here is amazing, while the menu might seem limited, what he does, he does well! On our first visit we ordered the breakfast special and a reindeer scramble. We asked to skip the toast and ordered one of the large blueberry muffins to share - that may have been the best decision of the entire trip! In addition to great tasting coffee, he has a selection of hot teas available. When you order any tea, he checks his canister and tells you how long to steep your tea before drinking it...who does that anymore? I returned two more times during our stay in Anchorage, I tried one of his oatmeal cookies...out of this world, buttery, vanilla-y with juicy raisins (and yes, I think oatmeal cookies should have juicy raisins) I forgot to mention, he does all of his own baking in addition to everything else! On the third trip, I brought family that had recently moved to Anchorage promising my niece the best blueberry muffin ever! Once again, he did not disappoint. My niece finished every bit of her muffin and a stole a good portion of mine. I have the feeling she will find a reason to go back there very soon. The friendly owner, baker, cook and all around great guy is only there Monday - Friday during the summer season. Don't miss this place on your visit to downtown Anchorage.

I have been meaning to come here since I first laid eyes on this place a few years ago. It looks like the quintessential cafe you'd find in a downtown, in a good way. Something that used to be a small warehouse or garage that was converted, that kind of vibe. But they've always been closed when I've been walking by. They do breakfast and lunch only, on weekdays only. I don't work downtown, so this often rules me out. I made a point to try them recently and...wow. I have been missing out! I ordered breakfast, close to closing time. There was one friendly dude running everything: cooking, ordering, serving, bussing. He was freakin' awesome. I got a classic breakfast platter that comes with a bit of everything: bacon, eggs, potatoes, toast. And an Americano. (they don't do drip coffee in the winter, not enough turnover) Food was fresh and outstanding. Maybe the best bacon I've ever had in Anchorage! Everything had such a "handmade" feel to it. Reminded me of when my Dad would wake up early on the weekend and make breakfast. I miss waking up to that smell.
